Life in Amazin Times: One Year Anniversary Letter

Album-Cover.jpg

Hello Everyone,

I first want to say thank you to every person who worked on a song, inspired a lyric, download the album, streamed one of the singles, or watched one of the videos. While the album was not the life altering moment I was hoping for I am grateful to everyone who took part in it. I hope you enjoyed listening to “Life in Amazin Times” as much as I enjoyed making it.

I evolved a lot as a song writer and as a performer in the course of recording this album. One important lesson I learned is people focus more on the chorus and beat then the lyrics. Take a song like “I’m Awesome” as an example a lot of people have told me they love that song. But the lyrics in the second verse are from an unrelated song and make no sense. While it’s not a song I like myself, I am glad it makes others happy.

One thing I was surprised when playing the album back was the overall optimism of “Life in Amazin Times.”  I found myself in a good space in the winter and spring of last year and was able to write some of the most commercially appealing stuff of my career. I made songs that connected to others, people I would not have meet otherwise and for that am grateful.

The final thing I learned from making my album,  was one of the hardest lessons I’ve ever had to go through.  If you go through a lot of hardship in your life, you think if you get to a certain goal or meet a certain person then everything else will be okay.  Like once you get over the hurdle of that goal or dream your troubles will disappear on the other side. When thinking about this objectively, you know deep down inside that is not really realistic. It is still a mindset I have found in a lot of people I am close to and within myself. For me recording this album was that one goal in my life. I learned that no one person or thing is going to solve all my problems or make my life perfect.

The goal of making life a better experience is in the small moments you have control over and who you decide to give your energy. Not so much in the big events, though they play a part too.

I have also decided that not writing and recording music is not an option for me. The thing that drew me to making music in the first place is it was something I don’t need other people to do. I really enjoy having something that I do that is just for my own happiness. I really enjoy the creative freedom rap music has and while I am not going to attempt something as ambitious as “Life In Amazin Times.” I hope by the end of spring to have something worth sharing with my friends, fans, and detractors.

Your Biggest Fan,

Jimmy ValenTime

Rappers Helping Rappers Vol. 2

1)      Varyus  Waise

V. Waise is a great rapper and more important a good man. One who is walking the walk that a lot of “conscious” rappers talk, someone active in the community and who is working with the youth. He gives a good twist to a lot of rap troupes, “Winter Summers” is about a girl giving you the run around and finally getting sick of the games. “Child Soldiers” talking about the lost youth from around his way and asking the tough questions why nobody makes a  cause out of their lost lives.

2) Kitty Pryde

I like Kitty a lot, she’s a really creative and funny person … She reminds me of a mix of Jessica (Season One +Two) from True Blood with Harley Quinn.  She got the attitude of a Def Jam Era Beastie Boy with a lot of sarcasm and an observational sense of humor that runs through her music and her online postings.   (This makes the fact that people get so mad at her and her music even funnier.)

She got this really nice casualness to her flow, like she sitting next to you and talking to you at a bar or a house party. Also she legit the best white female rapper I have ever heard.  Mainly because everything seems to come from her and she’s not over thinking any of it, in terms of her bars or her concepts. Kitty takes pride in just rapping about her own likes, hopes, and interest.

Doing what you want and not caring = Hip-Hop

3)   Carlos Ferragamo

The thing I like about Los ferra is that he’s always thinking and strategizing. He never got hung up on one aspect of being a rapper and he is always finding different way to express his creativity as an artist. He also one of the easiest people to work with and always been on point when it comes to sending back verses for songs and getting things knocked out quickly.  He’s going to be dropping his next album style mix-tape Shades of Blue 2 this fall.  If I get my situation figured out, hopefully we can work on The Wrath of God Album, The title for a Lost Angel album that I have been floating around as an idea.

Take it in Blood (NaS Salute) + Time (Music Video)

“Take it in Blood” is a reinterpretation of the classic Nas song “Take it in Blood” from the landmark album, It Was Written .     “Take it in Blood is the most autobiographical record on my album. I wanted to give people little snapshots of the despair and violence I witnessed throughout my life”  The video was shot in Jimmy Valentime old neighborhood  of Parkchester ;   located in The South Bronx.

“Time” is a song about how your actions can influence or affect others. Shot guerrilla style at St. Raymond’s Church on a warm October day. It is a video, that invokes the music’s  somber, but hopeful tone.

People’s Champion: A Review

Che With Bling on Complex ….

I was invited by Dallas Penn to a preview screening of Peoples Champion: The Eli Porter Documentary. I got to see 35 minutes of a rough cut of the movie that focused on analyzing the infamous YouTube clip that turned Eli in to an internet celebrity. The section itself will be part of a full length film which will show more of Eli’s life story. I was intrigued at how the story would present itself and what angle the film makers would take.

The great thing is if you were watching the film and had no clue about the youtube clip you would still be thoroughly entertained by the battle, but also gain an understanding of where all these people are coming from. The documentary does a great job of putting the clip itself in to context. The school Eli Porter attended was a normal high school, which held weekly Iron Mic battles that were broadcasted during lunch. The film shows different types of kids in a brief montage, freestyling. To put the clip in prospective, “The Iron Mic Battle” DVD would probably be the greatest awful rap anthology of all time.

Everybody that was there that day from the “Judges” to the AV club gets to say their piece. One of the great things is you can see they all genuinely like Eli. Eli was the type of kid that if you made fun of him, he snapped right back at you. He doesn’t come off as someone that needs to be treated with kid gloves.
